A new Chandler Desktop release, version 1.0.3, is now available.

Highlights include better support for Google’s CalDAV server,
the addition of a menu for choosing the calendar’s first day of the week
and, lastly, we’ve built .deb packages — for both 32-bit
and 64-bit processors — for Ubuntu 8.04 (“Hardy”) and
8.10 “Intrepid”).

Here is the full list of bugs fixed in 1.0.3:

• 11038 Feature request: a UI affordance for selecting the starting day of the week
• 12228 Get Mac native spell checker working again
• 12253 Sy&nc Mana&ger… (note two ampersands) in menus.py:223
• 12274 Deprecated libiuc36 dependency
• 12278 Support Google’s CalDAV implementation
• 12328 make all binaries in internal fails with: NameError: global name ‘log’ is not defined
• 12472 ValueError: too many values to unpack (selected message has angle brackets within the name as well as the SMTP address)
• 12484 Won’t start (Mandriva and possibly other Linuxes)

We are releasing a new Chandler Desktop, version 1.0.2, in order to address a couple of serious issues some users have reported. The following two bugs affect data export and reload:

• 12335 Total data loss on chandler startup - restore not possible
• 12353 Export to .chex fails

There is also a fix that addresses an interoperability problem that came up testing the
iPhone/iPhone Touch Quick Entry widget:

• 12381 Make eim lowercase all keys

The first in a line of approximately monthly bugfix releases after Chandler 1.0 is ready for public consumption. Chandler Desktop 1.0.1 addresses the following bugs:

We’ve decided to roll a Chandler Desktop 1.0 release candidate 2, mainly to address the following:

Windows users who upgraded to version 1.0-rc1 may have run into the following error message when launching Chandler:

“Another Chandler is already running off the same data repository.”

Thanks to reports from users, we’ve now fixed the problem in version 1.0-rc2.

If you download and run the new rc2 version, Chandler should launch and load your data without any problems. However, if you do run into any issues, please let us know at chandler-users@osafoundation.org!

In addition, we have addressed the following three bugs reported by users:

• 12256 Overzealous url detection
• 12262 Outlook doesn’t like empty body for multipart/alternative
• 12276 Changing date and day of custom weekly event results in item’s disappearance

The Chandler Team

We have released an early version of Chandler 1.0. 1.0-rc1 has been tested internally but we are relying on the general user community to help us test with real data and real daily usage.

There have been a number of significant, new features since the 0.7.7 release including:

• bug 7612 Clickable URLs in the Notes field
• bug 8087 Support for more recurrence rules (e.g. 3rd Wednesday of every month, MTTh weekly, etc)
• bug 12234 Performance improvement: Replace weekly “purge” with “export/reload”. (Many users reported experiencing noticeable performance boosts when upgrading, which is when you typically export and reload your data.)
• bug 11774 The LATER section in the Triage List view now sorts correctly! Displaying events and reminders “in chronological order”. Items without event or custom alarms dates appear at the bottom of the LATER section.
• bug 12246 Alarms are overriding the event date in the Triage List date column.

So please help us by upgrading to version 1.0-rc1 and as usual, send reports of any issues you find to the chandler-users list or bugzilla. To upgrade, you can either

We have released a special edition “Test Version” of Chandler Desktop in order to try out patches submitted by Nick Parlante for 2 oft-requested features:

1. Clickable links in the item notes field
2. Support more custom recurrence rules.

So please help us test by trying out these 2 new features! As usual, send feedback and report problems to The Chandler-Users mailing list.

Note for Mac and Linux: At this time, there is minimal support for visual feedback that links are clickable on Mac and Linux. Meaning, links will not be blue or underlined. However, if you mouse over a valid URL, your cursor should switch to the hand, and clicks should be handled correctly.

I’ve just put together a candidate build for Chandler Desktop 0.7.7. Besides some cleanup of the startup/shutdown UI, this is primarily a bugfix release: You can find the full list of 19 bugs addressed here.

This will almost certainly be the last in the 0.7.x series: We’ll be spending the next few weeks to a month fixing bugs, and preparing to release version 1.0.

It’s time to come out with another in our series of monthly-ish Chandler Desktop releases. Chandler Desktop 0.7.6 will contain the following two major features:

1. Separate detail view windows: This has been
   requested fairly often in the past. We’re
   nailing down the final UI for opening a new top-level window for a given item, but otherwise the code is done and has been checked into trunk.
   There will probably be a more detailed post at some point about using this feature: I personally have found it handy to
   use separate windows for items I update regularly but sporadically, like my grocery list.
2. Automatically checking for updates: I’ve added some data on our website to enable Chandler Desktop to check periodically (weekly is the default) for new releases. The app will pop up a dialog that tells you what the new release is, and allows you to click a button to download it in your
   web browser.

We’ve decided to roll a Chandler 0.7.5.1 to address two issues that users have been reporting in 0.7.5. These were actually both bugs present in 0.7.4, but probably I should have prioritized them higher. They are:

Bug 11718: Auto Reload fails…thinks repository is already in use.
This affected Windows users attempting to migrate their data when upgrading from an older version of Chandler.

Bug 11916: Exception subscribing to Google Calendar.
This makes it impossible to subscribe to a private Google calendar URL (and possibly other Google calendars).

Once I’ve downloaded and validated the build, which should happen in the next couple of hours, I’ll make the formal announcements, etc.

Updated to add: OK, everything turned out fine. Get Chandler Desktop 0.7.5.1 here.

Chandler Desktop has been in “release a Desktop dot version about once a month” mode since Preview shipped last year, and with that in mind, we’re still on track to release a 0.7.5 early in March. Besides the usual round of stability and usability fixes, here’s what’s in the works:

1. User Interface changes

   The trunk currently has implemented a fair deal of the Task → Star and
   Pared
   down Desktop UI proposals. Also, as my personal scratchy itch (and with some UI
   help from Mimi), I’ve made user collections in the sidebar re-orderable via drag-and-drop.

2. Cosmo security fixes

   Randy Letness has been the driver for addressing a security issue on
   the server side, where it’s relatively easy to give yourself read-write
   access to items that have been shared with you read-only. 0.7.5 will
   have some fixes to make things work more smoothly on the client
   side (see this thread
   for some of the discussion that went into this).

3. Printing

   Reid Ellis did some good work to get basic printing support in on
   a branch. Printing month views is working well for me, so I will
   be integrating his code into the trunk (possibly with some minor
   polish).
