Mobile Chandler?

September 29th, 2008 by Mimi Yin

One of the most common questions we get about Chandler is: Can I sync my Chandler data onto my mobile device?

The answer is Yes! While there aren’t full-featured Chandler mobile apps for all the various mobile platforms, you can sync Chandler data onto any device that can sync with or subscribe to calendars via .iCalendar or CalDAV.

Specifically, that means you can:

  1. Publish your collections to Chandler Hub;
  2. Subscribe to them with Apple iCal or Google Calendar;
  3. Use either Apple iSync or Google Mobile to get your Chandler data onto your mobile device.

Notes

You can sync all of your Chandler data to Apple iCal. Non-events will show up as tasks in the To-do list.

Currently Apple doesn’t sync To-do’s onto iPods or the iPhone, so you won’t see Chandler Notes on Apple’s devices. However, Apple iSync will sync To-dos onto Palm devices.

Google Calendar on the other hand, currently does not support tasks at all, so you can only sync events thru Google Calendar.

Apple iCal 3.x (Leopard) supports view-and-edit sharing via CalDAV, meaning you can make changes from your mobile device and they will sync back to Chandler. However, with Apple iCal 2.x (Tiger) and Google, you can only view your Chandler data.

There is a test build that supports 2-way view-and-edit sharing via CalDAV with Google. However, it has not yet been incorporated into the official release of Chandler desktop.

Liz Cademy wrote in with a success story linking Chandler to her iPod via iCal and iSync. I too, have been happily syncing 5 of my Chandler collections (events and notes!) to my new pink Palm Centro via iCal and iSync for a couple of weeks now. I’m thinking of finally upgrading from Tiger to Leopard so I can edit as well as view from my phone.

Has anyone else tried syncing to mobile devices in this way?

I am sorry to contradict, but iSync does NOT sync caldav subscribed calendars.
So it is possible to see all notes, tasks and events in ical, but the data will not be synced with a palm-device for example. It is working using webdav. But with this is a one-way-solution.

It is a known and often discussed problem: https://support.markspace.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=230

I was looking for an caldav-client for the palm itself, but without any success.
Anyway I like Chandler so much (it is much much much better than ical or sunbird) and the comfort and workflow chandler provides are so exceeding, I gave up the using of my palm for the moment.

If someone has a working solution syncing caldav-subscribed-callendars with a palm-device on the mac is welcome to tell me ;) -> stef[at]genialus[dot]de

Ah, Thanks for the correction Stefan. That’s too bad about iSync not supporting CalDAV. (I was looking forward to upgrading to Leopard for that very reason.)I imagine Apple will have to fix that at some point.

Does anyone know if the Web interface displays well on the Centro/iPhone? Syncing through Google, while convenient for personal use, is not a viable solution for business use. Ideally, it would be great to subscribe directly to the collection from the iPhone or Centro, but in lieu of Apple and Palm providing that functionality; being able to view the web interface well on those devices should be enough to use.

  4. Mimi Yin Says:

    Hi Munroe,

Viewing on iPhone works, though there are some bugs. Because of all the fancy javascript, I Palm’s browser can’t handle the web app.

  5. Andrew Says:

OS X has iCal as its “default” calendar. XP has nothing. Outlook doesn’t count. I don’t want to go through the cloud (eg. GCal). Any solution on the Windows? In my case the mobile devices in question are iPhone and N96.

  6. Mimi Yin Says:

    Hi Andrew,

There’s Mozilla Calendar (Lightning – which is a plugin for Thunderbird Mail or Sunbird) to subscribe to Chandler collections that are on Chandler Hub / Server.

Unfortunately, I don’t think Lightning / Sunbird support syncing with iPhone / N96 yet. http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/faq.html

  7. Andrew Says:

From what I can gather there is currently no workflow to sync Chandler/Cosmo with iphone on Windows, without going through OS X iCal or a cloud server like GCal. Please let me know if this is not the case.

  8. Brian Says:

This is real stumbling block for me (and I think a lot of other users). So many excellent web services have mobile-accessible web version – which is what chandler needs.

These days there are so many mobile devices with basic browsing capability, that a stripped down interface would be huge. Even just a quick-add interface like the iGoogle widget.

  9. Graham Perrin Says:

There’s a quick entry application for iPhone,
http://tinyurl.com/chandler-quick-entry-itunes leads to the relevant iTunes store page.

https://bugzilla.osafoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12820 suggests an update to Chandler Project home page and/or wiki.

Anyone have better luck with this? I just posted to the mailing list:
    —————————————————-
I’ve been scouring the net for info and am getting all kinds of
    information except what I need.

I have an iPod Touch 64G (3rd gen) and am trying to get a CalDav
connection to my chandler server. I’ve tried all kinds of stuff:

I’ve took the Apple iCal link and used it as a subscription where I can
view my Chandler collections but can’t *write* to them.

I then took a “special” CalDav link of the form:
    hostname:8080/chandler/dav/users/xxxxxx
as a CalDav account and it too has the events show, but I can’t *write*.

Finally, I took the CalDav link from Chandler server and used it to
setup the CalDav Account on the iPod. The verification worked but no
collections or events even show up on the Calendar app.

FYI, by *write* I mean making an entry on the iPod and having it show up
in my Chandler Server web application. As for firmware, I’m at
    3.1.2…default upon purchase.

My goal: sync my collection(s) on the Chandler server with my iPod and
other apps (Sunbird…which works by the way).
    ——————————————————-
I’m now going to try the CalDav link from Chandler server and enter it into the iPod as a subscription and see what happens….Fail. The account verification even failed; didn’t even have a chance to see if calendars show.

    Anyone have ideas?
