OSAF funds testing of open source spreadsheets
July 10th, 2003 at 10:51 am (4 years, 10 months ago) by OSAF under OSAFOSAF is funding extensive compatibility testing of spreadsheet functions in open source spreadsheets. As part of this initiative, the Gnumeric project, in partnership with the GNOME Foundation, will make small grants available to community volunteers to conduct extensive testing on more than 300 spreadsheet functions. The results will be shared with OpenOffice, the KDE community and other open source projects, with the goal of further improving the quality of open source spreadsheets, improving interoperability among the different open source spreadsheet programs and compatibility with the leading proprietary product.
“The availability of a strong set of interoperable productivity applications is key to the success of Linux on the desktop. Because of my background in spreadsheets, I have a particular interest in open source spreadsheet applications. I am therefore pleased to be able to make a small contribution to strengthening not just the Gnumeric spreadsheet, but interoperability among the different open source spreadsheet programs, and compatibility with the leading proprietary product. We also hope that this project will help build the community of volunteers contributing to these projects, and lead to even closer collaboration between Gnumeric, OpenOffice, KSpread and other open source spreadsheet projects.” - - Mitch Kapor, Chairman, Open Source Applications Foundation
